Audi wants to take a swing at premium small cars such as the Mini Cooper and Mini Cooper S. They will do so next year with the debut of the all new Audi A1 and Audi S1 as 2011 models.
What will sit under the hood of the all new S1? According to Autoexpress the new Audi S1 will feature a 1.2-litre TFSI turbocharged engine pushing nearly 200 bhp. This type of power is sure to be mated to Audi's signature Quattro all wheel drive meaning the car will handle just as well as it performs. Expect the new S1 to also feature a S-tronic 7 speed automatic transmission. Autoexpress says that this new S1 should hit the note to sixty in nearly 6 seconds with a top speed of 155mph. On the other hand, the new S1 will also be very fuel efficient and mpg's in the range of 35 are very likely with this new small scale Audi.
Just who will buy one? Audi brand loyalists will be jump all over the fact that a new smaller Audi will be coming into the Audi lineup. It will be the new entry level car from Audi and it will pack a punch that both previous owners will want to drive and new owners will want to experience. The car may even sway Mini drivers into the Audi brand : something that Audi would like all too much.
No word yet on a range topping RS1 version.
